Descriptive rolls of Massachusetts Volunteers (format A), 1861-1865.

The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state's Military Establishment, has been responsible for maintaining and reporting data concerning militia strength; these activities were intensified during the Civil War. These rolls describe the personnel of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia at that time. Chiefly involved are those units that were among the first to be called out (e.g., three months men, nine months men, 100 days men) A glued-in sheet containing resolutions of the veterans of the 47th Regiment, dated Sept. 2, 1901, is found in v. 9 (47th-48th Regiments). A photostat certifying Winslow Lewis as a member of the Boston Light Infantry Association, dated Nov. 1, 1862, is in v. 7 (43rd-44th regiments)
